Why do we have late-start Wednesdays? To create meaningful time for professional learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement that directly benefits our students.

During our PLC on October 21, 2026, BOUSD and Brea Junior High School staff engaged in AVID training focused on strengthening instructional practices and implementing schoolwide AVID Focused Note-Taking. This work supports our commitment to consistent instructional expectations, student engagement, critical thinking, and academic achievement across all classrooms.

One highlight of the training was Torey Coggins sharing insights from Arovista Elementary School, where focused note-taking practices are implemented across grade levels, from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through sixth grade. This example demonstrated how consistent instructional practices can build foundational skills and create a stronger transition for students as they advance to junior high to Brea Olinda High School and beyond.

One of the best ways to develop our educators is by learning from the incredible talent we already have within BOUSD. We were fortunate to learn from Kelly Wright, former BJH teacher and current BOUSD Instructional Coach; Torey Coggins, former GATE Instructional Coach and current BJH Assistant Principal; and Joshua Federwisch, BJH AVID Coordinator and science department Chair.

By leveraging the expertise of our own educators and leaders, we build capacity within our district, strengthen collaboration, and ensure professional learning is relevant to the needs of our schools and students.

The Brea Difference is created by the people within BOUSD. When we share our expertise, learn from one another, and invest in our collective growth, our entire school community benefits.

Brea Junior High’s ofrenda, created by our Dual Language Program, is a beautiful example of how our program brings culture, language, and learning to life.

As part of this meaningful lesson, Mrs. Palczewski taught students about the significance of each element of an ofrenda and its role in the Día de los Muertos tradition. Students then put their learning into action by handcrafting picture frames, painting decorative skulls, creating paper marigolds, and selecting loved ones to honor and remember.

Through this hands-on experience, students deepened their understanding of cultural traditions while practicing their Spanish and making personal connections to the meaning behind the ofrenda.

We are proud of Mrs. Palczewski and our Dual Language students for creating such a thoughtful display that celebrates cultural heritage, honors loved ones, and reflects the rich learning experiences taking place at BJH! #breajuniorhigh #bousd

Observed on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, Chuseok is one of Korea’s most cherished traditional holidays—a meaningful time dedicated to expressing gratitude, celebrating community, and sharing a bountiful season with loved ones.

As we honor these enduring traditions—from ancestral reflections to enjoying seasonal treats like songpyeon—the National Junior Honor Society wishes our entire school community a peaceful, joyful, and restful holiday.
