High families hello welcome to a speech and debate back to school night so happy to have you here I am mrs. Mystic hat I will be your child's teacher this year let's get started so this is my amazing family two girls and a three-year-old almost 5 months old and then we have a shepherd husky lab mix and these three keep my husband and I it's a little bit about me I went to UCLA I have a degree in English and then I went to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles as well and I got a master's degree in Education Act this is my fourth year I almost said that this is my fourth year in a gray Junior High School I teach 7th grade English speech and debate and Bobcat Academy a couple things your students might need this year there's definitely going to need paper handy with them weather at school or on Zoom we do take note put on the spot for a speech which may or may not happen once in awhile they also are going to definitely need when they're giving speeches I ask that they cars in front of them so that they can easily read what they're going to say remind themselves of what they need to say it's the best way to keep them organized for speeches and then if they have a binder at the points and friends and everything is little while here but it's a have a binder I ask that they have a speech and debate section where they put any handouts or no seimei take for our class that's really more for the classroom Zoom most things are in the house in Google Classroom so they won't have to worry too much about that binder but when we do go back to the classroom singers cry need a section for that we first start with an introduction unit and really the basis of that and then getting to know one another and being comfortable speaking so right now. lots of questions this or that for them to really talk and just be comfortable talking in front of the whole class in front of small groups on flipgrid multiple ways that's really the goal here is I want them to be confident speaking before we get into the content here next we go into persuasive informative and entertaining those are three separate unit and he's really built a basis how they're going to sell the information that they're going to need for an actual debate in each one of these units all three of these they give a longer speech in front of people so we're really building that I'm practicing with no cars in written speeches in doing the research and writing the speeches and working in teams at some point as well so that get to that debate unit which is always the last unit they're really prepared and ready to debate because they know how to research they know how to work with our classmates are comfortable speaking in front of other people they know how to gather that information organized how to get to B-Dubs really our goal here so as far as speaking and listening we do a lot in this class are going to do a lot of partner work they're going to do some group work there obviously great presentations of all the individual ones they're going to have to get speeches on their own 3 and fact actually for specific ones that we get into as the year progresses and presentations of course as well super informal some very formal and all depends how can you help your child be successful this year in progress in my class in all their classes the biggest thing is going to be set my time to make sure that they're up to date on all of their assignment and the second thing is that you want to encourage them to practice their speeches in front of you so that they're comfortable speaking and what they're going to say Google Classroom like I said is where all of our assignments are going to be a house and it's a great place to look when your child is absent and you can check their grade within Google Classroom as well so it's the best contact me is always by email my email is listed here you can also get there through the school website are syllabus at house on the website if you'd like to read more about the class that is it for us tonight but thank you so much and watching my video and enjoy
