hello everybody this is Maria Gonzalez I am your son or daughter's language arts teacher at the semester I'd like to welcome you to back to school night virtual hello again in the next couple of minutes that we have together there are three topics that I'd like to discuss with you the first one is what our curriculum is going to be in 7th grade language arts my expectations for your student and finally what's the best way that you and I can stay in touch with one another so that your son or daughter can be as successful as possible before we get started let me just share a little about myself I've been in education for 30 years in the past 15 of those years I've been here at Brea Junior High teaching 7th graders there is not a day that goes by that I am not grateful for that decision that I made not only do I thoroughly enjoy the 7th grade language arts curriculum but I also feel that 7th graders are the best group of students it's my favorite age group and so now let's get started with our really important business number one what is it that we're going to be doing in 7th grade language arts will I have a pretty regular routine that I will have you didn't take part in every week and that routine is going to include things like grammar writers notebook entries reading independently and you probably have seen your child last week reading for about 15 minutes every evening Monday through Thursday then on Friday they're going to be doing Special writing activities related to those Independence on it reading books in the form of Anaya star reading lawn sweet word dissection where dissection is a program that we have here at the junior high school for both 7th and 8th graders and it's a program that teaches students word Parts the idea is that the more familiar you are with when you are reading independently or taking a test and you encounter a word that you are not familiar with if you can dissect its parts and you know what the different word Parts you might be able to figure out the definition of in addition to that we will have literature units that we will study and also writing units in our literature units they are going to be two novels that we're going to be working on together in class the first one is The Outsiders and the second one is the Call of the Wild our third literature unit is going to be up play The Miracle Worker and that is going to be a play that we're going to be reading out loud and students will volunteer to be the roles of the different characters for the last couple of years that we've taught The Miracle Worker who doesn't really enjoyed that more than anything else because they get the opportunity perform and show their artistic side so that is what the curriculum is going to look like now what about expectations so my expectation is that my students will report to my dailies meetings on time and I have to say I've been really really impressed with the students this semester everybody is joining on time they are aware that I post a link every morning at 7 a.m. on the stream of Google classroom and so I'm really happy to report that I'm also expecting my students to complete all of their assignments on time now I realize that sometimes there are circumstances that might prevent a student from completing an assignment and parents if that's the case if you see that your child is overwhelmed with other assignment purchase isn't feeling well when evening and needs that Edition time all you need to do is send me an email or leave me a message letting me know what the situation is and how much extra time you think your child is going to need and I will be more than happy to grant that extension I'm also expecting my students to be on Google classroom and paying very close attention not only to the instructions but also to the due date and the Utah unless there is an exception to my world I'm about to share with you right now all assignments will be due by 5 p.m. and so that should get students more than enough time to get my assignment turn in also I expect all of my students to check their grades on the portal at least twice a week they are at an age right now where they need to have that responsibility to be checking their grades and if they feel that there is a concern that they reach out to their teacher to me specifically and I'll be more than happy to address any questions or concerns that they have and finally my last expectation is that my students will take advantage of all the opportunities that I had that in place to help them be successful I call this a safety net and there are three safety nets that I have in place safety-net number one I allow my students to read take a wd test so for example let's say that we have a test next Wednesday and your student sees the score on the portal and is not quite happy with the results I need you to know that your student has the ability to retake the test and I will give your student the higher of the two scores II safety net that I have in place is the ability to rewrite any assignment that falls in writing category the reality is that no one is going to improve as a writer unless he or she practices writing a lot so when I give a writing assignment and I'd provide a score and your students pills that he or she would like another opportunity to update that draft and submit a second draft or even a third draft your child has the ability to do that and again I will read it offers suggest give a grade and if at that point your students still feels that he or she could rewrite it revised it edited your student has the ability to do that in the final safety net that I have in place is X credit now I don't provide extra credit many times during the semester but I offer it enough that I hope that when your student sees that I have an extra credit opportunity that he or she will take me up on that offer and the last thing that I want to share with you is how you and I can best keep in touch and really there are two ways you can either call me at school and I'm at school between 7:30 and 3 in the afternoon so you can leave a message what time Monday through Friday or you can send me an email again Monday through Friday from about 7:30 to 5 p.m. I'm really good about returning emails and phone calls within 24 hours you see the 24 hours of Gone by 9 I haven't responded to you chances are I did not receive your email so send me another email or leave me another message and again I promise you that within 24 hours I will respond to you this is an interesting year that we are currently in and as you may know our school theme this year is our great adventure and we are definitely on a great adventure when stings when we go on adventures they can be pretty exciting so I hope that all of us keep a positive attitude that we see this as an opportunity to grow and to learn and I wish you and your all the very best during this school year thank you so much and I hope you've enjoyed back to school night at Brea Junior High School good luck
