hello everybody my name is Maria Gonzalez and welcome to back to school night the virtual Edition this semester I'm going to be your son or daughter's other teacher and I'd like to spend the next couple of minutes sharing with you important information about my class before we get started I would like to share with you a couple of things about myself I have been in education for 30 years and during those 30 years I have worn quite a few hats I have been a comprehensive High School teacher I have worked at a continuation High School I have been a College advisor and I've also been administrator here at Brea Junior High many many many years ago the best decision that I made there was 15 years ago when I decided to come back into the classroom and I've been teaching 7th grade language arts for 15 years and for the past five years I've been teaching the Avid elective this is my first year though teaching intro to Avid and I'm excited good to be working with your 7th and 8th graders hoping to help them start thinking about college and helping to instill in them the skills and strategies necessary to be successful in car and Beyond number one I want to share with you just a little bit about Abbott's history so in 1980 in high school in San Diego an English teacher by the name of Mary Catherine Swanson realized that there was a growing achievement gap between the students at her school and she felt that she needed to do something about it she enlisted a couple of very brave teachers on her campus and they founded the AVID program whose mission is to close that achievement Gap so that all students are ready college and Beyond and so that class of hers that elected it only had 32 students 40 years later his graduated countless thousands of students who have been successful college and Beyond and I feel very fortunate that we have the program here not only at Brea junior high school but also in Brea Olinda Unified we have it at the elementary level and we have it at the high school level so if your student but Avid is their home that this is an elective that they see themselves being and not just this year but all throughout High School I hope that they do decide to do that because there is a home them here in 8th grade if your student is a 7th grader or at the high school level if your student is in 8th grader this year so what does the class look like will it boils down to three words and that is rigor Readiness and relationships and so in the area of rigor the goal of avid is to provide your students with the skills and strategies to be successful and to be able to tackle those rigorous difficult courses that they will inevitably need to take when they go to HighSchool namely honors and AP class so in the Avid class there will be lots opportunities for students to practice note-taking to practice their speaking skills to practice their persuasive skills because these are all strategies that they are going to employ when they go to High definitely when they go to college readiness Avid mix student ready for college and so part of what they're going to be doing an avid is learning about the different opportunities that they have post High School whether it is a community college a Cal State a UC school a private school or school that's in another state and then relationships Alvin is very much about being part of a family and the idea that we're helping one another to reach that ultimate goal so an avid there are weekly opportunities for students to take part in study groups where they meet with other students that share their same math teacher or science teacher and they help one another not to give each other answers to ask the questions that are necessary when students have a point of Confusion by the way that to turn that your abs Dunes will be learning soon so when they have a point of confusion they will know what to do and where to go to be able to resolve that point of confusion so what is it that I'm expecting your students to do all the big thing is to have a positive attitude and to see this as an opportunity to learn and to grow and so far I have been very very impressed with my students both in my Avid 7 and my intro to Avid class I expect them to report to the Zumba class everyday to give 100% to realize that everything is not going to be easy but when it is difficult not to give up and to have grit that is a concept that we're going to be discussing quite a lot this year have grit what can you do moms and dads so that you and I are communicating regularly feel free to email me feel free to call me Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 4 and I promise you that I will return that phone call or I will return that email if you find a 24 hours of gone by now I haven't responded chances are that I probably did not receive your email so try a second time and I promise that I will respond to you as quickly as possible this year we are going on a great adventure and I'm still trying to wrap my head how I'm going to be able to do everything digitally and everything online but when you go on an adventure it's exciting you come across things that you were not expecting and you figure out a way around and so with your help with my students help I know that we're going to have a great adventure together and at the end or going to feel an incredible sense of accomplishment thank you so much for attending our back to school night I wish you a Avid student wonderful wonderful year good luck
