hi I am mrs. Humphrey welcome to back to school night I am your 7th grade student science teacher and I want to share a slide presentation with you so that you can learn about my class so once again welcome to back to school night want to tell you a little bit about me I went to Whitman College in Walla Walla Washington for two years and then I transfer to Brigham Young University in Provo Utah where I got my BS and then later my Ms is a lot and I have five children and 13 grandchildren here are some photos that you can look at me and kids activities I'm involved with school and some of my family this is contact information on the best way to contact me I'm especially now during distance learning is by email I do have a conference. And the times are listed there and my phone number so if you want to try to call me but the best way is by email you can go to The District web page go to the staff directory to access my web page and you can find more information there about what we're doing but more on the long-term basis not just on a short-term basis everyday I use Google Classroom I post announcements are copies of class notes and their assignments are listed there if you want to be able to see your student science Google too many haven't already signed up and you can email me with your name your child's name and. And your email information and we can get you added to that but your students should look at Google Classroom every single day I need it also get text messages or reminders of major sinus or test if you sign up for remind and this is the information for that just so you know we were supposed to be getting new textbooks this year but because of covid-19 the district doesn't have the funds to purchase those books so we are currently using the old books fortunately for 7th grade a lot of what 7th grade studies is still in those textbooks so I will be using the textbook but not everything will be in there so during distance learn be sure your student checks Google Classroom every school day check both the stream and the classwork section not just the classwork in the Stream I post the things that needs to be done each day and then you need to go and who sings in class work make sure you student join Zoom class with a device that works properly if you're having problems with your device with connectivity or audio or video the school for help I do expect the kids to have their audio and their video on and working make sure you're choosing to ask me questions if they don't understand something but was he uses Gmail to communicate with me and make sure that they're turning in their work on Google Classroom it's a I prefer it just returned right into where Simon is in Google Classroom not emailed to me and make sure you check Aeries Gradebook at least once a week to see what's happening I share this with my students about how to be successful students they need to read follow directions listen follow directions ask questions and follow directions a lot of times kids do poorly on assignments just because they don't follow these steps especially the following directions I want to suggest that we as parents to students and teachers should do a paradigm shift that instead of focusing on Grey's we need to focus more on what the student is learning the grave should be a reflection of what they've learned in done but the goal is for your students to learn science the goal should not be the grade I used to standard grading scale four things and we have a variety of things that I based the grade on assignments activities dailogs test quizzes and their notebook in science down instead of having sax just listed as our standard to expect kids to know we expect them to be able to perform certain tasks and those Tasker call Performance expectations some examples of performance expectations for the ecosystems unit notice they have to be able to analyze and interpret data Bella construct explanation is develop models so it's not just giving me facts they do need to know facts and terminology but they need to be able to use it in an appropriate way to do these types of things also in science now it was again not just the facts the facts would be here in to the disciplinary core ideas that list certain topics that we cover but we also expect the kids to be able to look for any but we talk cross-cutting Concepts that would be fine in the information we study and we also want to be developing science and engineering practices so the science that there is students are learning now or different is different from the science that you learn with boarding school so these are the topics that we covered here in 7th grade is it the main four units that we cover and we are going to start with ecosystems crosscutting Concepts I was talking to you about you might want to ask your kids if they recognize any crosscutting concepts in the topics that we're currently studying and this is a list of the specific signs engineering practices we expect our students to be learning and using on top of all this we want our students to learn to 21st century competencies with your critical thinking activity collaboration and communication I have my students do an Interactive Science notebook is a spiral-bound notebook where they write notes and that they also reflect on it modeling in it and hopefully we'll keep them organized they do hit her grade on Her Interactive Science notebook make sure you check your student progress at least once a week in the parent portal make sure you check your Google Classroom you also need to realize that it will take time to grade assignments that get them entered and if your student turn something in late after I've already did all the other students it will be graded later because they turned it in late and will be entered into Google later make sure you pay attention to do dates and look also see if it says grading is completed sometimes I have parents wanting to know about a great assignment that isn't even graded or entered yet it just because it's blank doesn't mean they have a zero or it's missing to just be it's not graded yet what you need to worry about it as if there's a highlighted box with no score that means your student did not receive credit for it because either wasn't turned in or they didn't put their name on it you need to also pay attention to things your kids got Zero's on not just the highlighted boxes of missing work if you have ink cartridges you can drop them off at the front office of the school I turn them into Staples and we get a little bit of money to help out our science department other opportunities that we have in science we will be doing Science Olympiad this year not as an elective class but as a club I'm they are doing the competitions online and they're doing fewer events and modified events doing due to the fact that they are going to be able to do the competitions and online I'm we're going to start meeting after school on Tuesdays if your child is interested have them contact me and that we have an invitation of coming up on Saturday October 10th also another academic event that I would encourage students to sign up for the mr. Madden will be working with after school and that is academic pentathlon and the scene for this year is the Cold War so thank you for for joining me and hopefully I get to actually see you guys in person someday thanks
