hi I am mrs. Humphrey welcome to back to school night I am your 8th grade student science teacher and I'm going to share a slide presentation with you but I can tell you about my class so give me a second here so this is my back to school night presentation so just a little bit about me I attended Whitman College in Walla Walla Washington and then I transfer to Brigham Young University where I got my BS and then later my Ms in Zoology I have five children and 13 grandchildren and I put in a some pictures here to show you some of my family and some stew activities that I've been involved with this is my contact information I'm not always at school during distance learning so calling the school is not your best idea but you should look at emailing me if you want to contact me are you can also go to my web page and go to the staff directory there so go to the Junior I web page and someone told me this is not the correct link so I'm go to the Brea Junior High web page and then try that and this information about my class not like immediate information but long-term type of information generally I'm in Google Classroom you can find announcements copies of class notes and assignments if you want to be able to see it and you can't see I see Google Classroom send me your student's name. And your email so that I can get you connected you can also signed up for remind me to get text message reminders of major assignment Certo it's not for everyday things just so you know the new text books that we were supposed to be getting this year we will not be getting because of covid-19 District no longer has the phone the purchase does the old test books that your student has has some information that we cover but we don't have a lot of what we cover this year lot of our topics aren't even covered in RI text book so they will be getting information from me from other sources I'm driving distance learning make sure your student checks Google Classroom every single school day make sure they look at both stream classwork the stream list things that they should be doing and the order and then it class Works were they will actually doing work make sure they join their Clan Zoo classes with the device that works properly has good audio and video and good, connectivity on Michigan's have problems with your device even if it's a personalized you can contact the school for help I make sure your students ask questions if they don't understand thing I'm use School Gmail to communicate with me. Make sure they turn their work and go in on Google Classroom not through email if they're desperate they can send it to email but they should be able to just turn it in and Google Classroom so I'll have all the students assignments there in one place and make sure they check Aeries Gradebook at least once a week so how to be a successful student make sure they read follow directions listen follow directions ask questions and follow directions a lot of kids do poorly on assignments just because they don't follow the directions I suggest that we need to do a paradigm is how we think about our education I want you and your students to focus more on the learning then I'm getting the grade the gray will reflect what they have learned and done I want them to focus on trying to learn about the science that we are studying I'm I used to standard grading and a greater variety of a sinus activities test quizzes and notebook to earn their lights in science today instead of having facts listed as standards what we expect the kids to be able to do after we study stuff is called the performance expectation so instead of expecting Georgia Tech facts we want them to be able to perform certain tasks and those tasks are called performance expectations so here's an example of some performance expectations for our unit matter and its interactions I was just need to be able to develop models they need to be able to interpret and interpret data they need to gather and make sense of information so there are specific tasks that the student should be able to do in a relationship to what we have studied I want to buy with this or what we call the three dimensions of science vacation the disciplinary core ideas listed here in the middle would be the facts or the science topics and then we want them to look for cross-cutting Concepts Concepts that connected to other sciences and then we also want them to be able to implement science and engineering practices while we are so they're learning all of these things all at the same time so here's a list of the disciplinary core ideas the main topics that we are studying this year and in 8th grade here's a list of the cross-cutting concepts M I want to ask your kids so you wouldn't you ask me about what they're studying also ask him about what crosscutting concepts they might see in those topics and here's a list of the science and engineering practices that we expect them be able to develop on top of all this we also expect students to work on the 21st century competencies we want them to develop critical thinking creativity Club rayshun and communication my students do an Interactive Science notebook to help increase their understanding of science that will take notes in there they were right in there they will model in there they will draw in in order to help them learn science my check suggest you check the children's progress on Parent Portal once a week check Google classroom for information also realize it's time to grade assignments and get them entered it takes even longer now I say with distance learning cuz we can't have students really straight papers and grade each other's papers staring covid if your student turns in something late realize that assignment will be graded it in her when time allows if they turn after everyone else's stuff is greater it will take time for me to get back to that and enter it pay attention to do dates look to see if Brayden completed his can check is checked what you really need to learn worry about are two things if there's a highlighted box with no stroke score that means your student did not receive credit for the assignment either because they didn't do it or didn't properly identify themselves on the paper so I couldn't get some credit for it but you also need pay attention to save a zero on an assignment is that impacts their gray because it's it'll tell you they're not doing the work can we do a science fundraiser your student can't really bring you in newsprint toner cartridges to my classroom but you can turn them in at the front desk and they will get them to me initial opportunity your student has and science would be to participate in Science Olympiad is not as an elective class this year is to Club competitions will be on lined the events have been modified due to the fact that we're not doing a person and we will be meeting Zoom meetings after school on Tuesdays we do have a Invitational coming up on Saturday October 10th so have your student email me if they are interested in joining us on there's also another after-school activity that. info about science and other subjects it's the academic pentathlon I missed your man's in charge of this and you will get information later about when that's going to be meeting on this is a good opportunity for the BNC students to shine because the Typhon requires the teams to have a DSC students unlike Science Olympiad that generally just has the a student's the theme for this year is the Cold War so thank you for joining me and hopefully I'll get to see you in person someday feel free to email me with any questions or concerns that you have
